YOUKO SANO

I have been working with basket forms and patterns. Baskets remind me of birds’ nests or cradles; they all gently protect what they contain. Baby birds and babies feel safe inside their nests and cradles. For me baskets symbolize shelter, home and family. I am using the cutting technique in a different way from the traditional one. I cut into a built-up color surface. As I do so, the exquisite patterns come out. I use the cutting technique to remove the glitter and shine of glass. The surface becomes silky and matt. Because of the elaborate pattern and tactility, the impression of my work becomes calm and soft. I am trying to make works which can create this restful atmosphere. I want people to find warmth and integrity from my works.
